In 1953 on an evening while trying to sell a weapon to get to some money and drugs, William Burroughs killed his wife, Joan Vollmer. Provocating eachother constantly they decided to play together the legend of”William Tell”; she put a glass on her head and he fired. Killed her on the spot. After her death, William started with his literary life. In the chronology of their realshionship it is interesting to note that they’ve reached such tension between them , a climax which never made it clear if Joans death was an actual murder or either an accident.
Both proceeding from similar artistic backgrounds and techniques, such as classical, modern, performance and visual arts, the artists share a strong bond to cinematography. Built around some complex images and architectural choreography, the body here becomes the messenger and the narration of an abstract painting.

There is a particular focus on the 50’s cinematic aesthetisizm where each element, from the costumes to the light and make up is there to create a universe with the aim of creating a black and white “ film noire “ piece. Where the reality of the emotions is being intwined with the plasticity proposed.

« The truth is irrelevant, it’s all a pile of lies and historical revisionism, there is nothing close to the truth, it’s all in your mind. » William Burroughs

Revue de presse

Ladies and gentlemen, we have before us two great fetishists! Just as in David Cronenberg’s film Crash, where you met a few obsessed people to relive the car accidents of certain celebrities, here are two dancers who have come together to reconstruct the death of William Burroughs’ wife: the costumes must therefore be “vintage”, the scars must be as realistic as possible, they drink, she picks up a revolver, the light is black and white, in the background the voice of His Highness Burroughs… And maybe you won’t believe me, but I could swear their underwear is from another time too.
So, yes, the audience is fascinated. Marie and Stamenkovic have created this work for themselves: the ceremony is private. Here, Burroughs and his wife re-enact the murder indefinitely in repetitive movements (with variations in power). And once resurrected, it’s a matter of dying and killing again, until they no longer feel like it, or until the climax. Everything here is cold: only what’s needed to get around. Yes, but there’s a certain interest in this exhibition. The key will be Burroughs’ phrase: “truth is only history revisited […] truth exists only in your heads.”
“Truth? We’ve rarely seen autistic discourse so coherent: truly the Radicals Festival is their place.
